A New Challenge
Lately, the love of reading has been on our minds. Last month, we responded to recent concern expressed in the New York Times SchoolBook blog by sharing some simple tips for cultivating a love of reading in children. In the beginning of February, our Facebook and Twitter accounts buzzed with discussion around our favorite childhood books. Our friends weighed in with all the classics: Frog and Toad, Love You Forever, The Berenstain Bears, and many other beloved texts we discovered as children and still adore no matter how old we grow.
As important as it is for Read Alliance students to gain the foundational reading skills necessary for their academic success, we also realize that these skills stretch beyond the school day. Basic reading skills are the building blocks for a life-long love of reading and learning.

This month, we proudly announce a new and very special opportunity to share the love of reading offered to us through a challenge grant from the Peter Jay Sharp Foundation. The Peter Jay Sharp Foundation has generously offered to grant Read Alliance $25,000 so that we may improve our technology and ultimately serve our students and their teen tutors even more efficiently. The challenge: Read Alliance must also raise an additional $25,000 to receive the grant.
So, the next time you find yourself thinking about your most beloved book as a child, remember to share the love. You can do so by giving a gift to Read Alliance and helping us reach our new fundraising goal, signing up for our quarterly newsletter, or sharing our story with a friend or colleague. Remember, not only does every little bit of support count--it doubles!
