How Teen Tutors Make an Impact
As National Mentoring Month comes to a close, we reflect upon the relationship Read Alliance teen tutors have with their students. It is common for Read Alliance teens to explain how they began tutoring with the idea that they were too young to be role models; too inexperienced to make a difference in a child’s life. After being paired with their students, their minds change. When the program comes to a close, Read Alliance students gain, on average, one year’s growth in reading skills. Tutors benefit too, as they report higher levels of patience, higher grades in English Language Arts, and most of all, feeling empowered as a role model.
These two teens from the Bronx explain what it is really like to be a Read Alliance teen tutor, and how they are making an impact:
