How We Help Tutors
Our tutoring positions offer many benefits beyond a paycheck. Teens will develop important life skills, learn about the responsibilities of having a job and even become more prepared for college.
Self-Efficacy
Our teen tutors develop self-confidence, accountability and pride as they learn that their commitment as a teen tutor can help shape the future of their young reader.
Training
Tutors are trained to teach children using a research-based curriculum. Tutors learn effective behavior management techniques, data collection, punctuality and appropriate workplace communication. They also learn basic skills of managing and understanding a paycheck.
Community Service
Tutors earn community service hours while building their high school and college application portfolios. Teens learn the value of giving back to their communities.
Paid Positions
Teens over the age of 14 who serve a minimum of 4.5 hours of community service and successfully submit all required payroll documents may earn a paid position earning $7.25 an hour during the School Year Program. Teens who participate in the School Year Program may also achieve summer employment for $8.50 an hour.
Opportunities for Advancement
Tutors demonstrating leadership skills during our school year and summer programs can be considered for promotion to Lead Tutor. Lead tutors receive higher compensation than tutors ($12.50 per hour) and have broader responsibilities.
Build Your Future
Build Your Future is an extension of our Summer Program that provides teens with skills necessary for college and career success. Tutors who participate during the school year, achieve 85% attendance and receive excellent evaluations from their Site Coordinators/Read Alliance Teachers may be selected to participate in a series of 2-hour workshops to explore interesting topics related to relevant subjects.
"Initially I became a Read Alliance tutor because I needed money terribly. Now I am a Read Alliance tutor to give back to little kids in my community. I feel as though I improved their reading and made them more enthusiastic to learn."
