Third Annual Celebration

The New York Public Library proved to be the perfect venue for The Third Annual Celebration, as more than 150 guests gathered in support of Read Alliance, raising nearly $300,000. Teens and parents, school principals, corporate sponsors and other key supporters attended the annual benefit in celebration of 11 years of outstanding results and continued growth.

The evening featured guest speaker, Schroder Investment Management’s Chief Operating Officer, Mark Hemenetz, who shared Schroder’s experience as a partner in the Adopt-A-School program, supporting students and teens at PS5X in the Bronx.

“One of the many reasons we initially were intrigued by Read Alliance is because it prepares not one, but two generations of youth for future success,” said Hemenetz.

By adopting a school, Schroder's employees have had the opportunity to meet and read with students of PS5X. Employees have made individual gifts and Schroder Investment has been dedicated to matching them, underwriting the costs of 20 teen tutors, 2 supervising classroom teachers and materials and curriculum for 36 students.

“Students have experienced significant gains by improving reading levels by approximately 1 year,” said Mary Padilla, Principal of PS5. “Each year I have seen these students moving forward with the confidence and skills Read had promised.”

The evening also featured essay reading by top teen tutors, a wonderful demonstration of the positive impact on both tutors and students.

"Hearing our teens share their experiences as tutors really demonstrates the impact of our work,” said Read Alliance President, Yvonne Petrasovits. "Thank you to all of our supporters who continue to make these results possible."
