Summer Reading Program Recipient of NYC Department of Education Book Giveaway Helping Students from Disadvantaged Communities Build Their Own Libraries

New York, NY, Aug. 9, 2011 — Representatives from the Department of Education will visit Public School 3 in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn Tuesday to distribute books to students enrolled in the Read Alliance Summer Reading Program. Read students, primarily from low-income communities in New York City, receive one-to-one tutoring from teenage tutors from their same neighborhoods. The Book Giveaway partnership with the Department of Education provides these students with the opportunity to chose a book, from a selection of age and level-appropriate books, and take it home to begin building their personal libraries.

“For our students, who come from some of the city’s most disadvantaged communities, selecting a book to take home with them is a special opportunity, and one that they would most likely not have otherwise,” said Read Alliance President, Yvonne Petrasovits. “We are so grateful for this partnership and for the ongoing support of the Department of Education of Read Alliance programming.”

In addition to the book giveaway, representatives from the New York Public Library will also be on hand to sign children up for library cards, providing them with more opportunities for independent reading outside of the school day.

Read Alliance works with more than 30 elementary schools in New York City, serving more than 1,200 students each year through its School Year and Summer Reading Programs. This summer, Read is serving more than 225 students at 8 New York City schools, providing students with a combined 725 hours of one-to-one tutoring.

ABOUT READ ALLIANCERead Alliance addresses the serious need for early education literacy intervention, working to improve the educational trajectory of at-risk kindergarten and first grade students through one-to-one tutoring in basic reading skills. Since its founding in 2000, Read Alliance has served more than 10,000 struggling students across all five boroughs of New York City, most from the city’s most disadvantaged neighborhoods, including Bedford Stuyvesant, Harlem and the South Bronx.  Read fosters individual literacy by addressing the lack of early language and literacy experiences, enabling kindergarten and first grade students, regardless of their baseline levels, to master grade level skills in phonics and fluency.  On average, Read Alliance students gain more than one year’s growth in basic reading skills at this crucial time in early education.
