Kindergarten & 1st Grade
We partner with schools and community-based organizations to provide students with over 35 hours of structured one-to-one tutoring and additional literacy support in our after-school, in-school and summer programs. All programs employ the research-based Reading for All Learners Program (RALP), which comprises a series of books aligned with the recommendations of the National Reading Panel that is designed to help create independent readers by the second grade.
Children in our program gain an average of a year's growth in their reading skills, which allows them participate in class at a level with their peers. The Read Alliance early intervention allows the whole class to move ahead faster. Elements of our program that ensure success include:
- Individual assessment of each student to determine his or her appropriate placement within the RALP curriculum
- Explicit reading instruction and practice
- Student mastery of the reading skills in one book before progressing to the next
- Daily recording of student attendance, progress, and mastery
- Analyzing progress data to monitor success and identify and communicate areas of concern
- Formal training of teen tutors in the use of the RALP curriculum, data collection, and tutor responsibilities
- Session oversight by teachers, who receive Read Alliance training and who provide tutors with continuous feedback and support
"I no longer have to hold over first grade students."
